The day after Halloween, the first of November, is a day dedicated to the celebration of all saints known and unknown. This day can go by the name of many; All Saints Day, Solemnity of All Saints, All Hallows, and widely known through Louisiana as La Toussaint. This day is similar to those like Veterans Day and Presidents Day, where a numerous amount of people are honored. This day is important, because in American culture we honor plenty of Saints on specific dates, like, St. Patrick, St. Valentine, and even St. Nicholas, but plenty of Saints have become forgotten. This is a day, to specifically thank and ask for guidance from all saints. It is a national holiday in many historically catholic countries.
In most countries like Mexico, and Spain offerings are made to the dead. In other countries like France and Italy, flowers are brought to the grave sites of family members. Louisiana on the other hand, is celebrated much like the Latin American, Day of the Dead. Families gather at cemeteries and eat lunch. The tombs would be decorated with a coronne de toussaints, which is wreath, made of flowers. It has become common in southern Louisiana cemeteries to hold mass followed by a candlelight ceremony and a blessing of the tombs.
Something else that makes this holiday special to Louisiana is that on this day, November 1, 1966, The New Orleans Saints were franchised. CoOL huh??
